MARANGU ROUTE – 6 DAYS

6 Days

Overview

The Marangu Route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most popular trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is considered one of the easiest routes in terms of technical difficulty, as no climbing or mountaineering skills are required. However, it is also one of the shortest routes, with relatively high elevation gain each day, making acclimatization more challenging for some climbers.

The route begins at Marangu Gate, ascending through lush rainforest before transitioning into heath, moorland, and alpine desert zones. Compared to other routes, the landscapes are generally less varied and scenic, as the ascent and descent follow the same path.

One of the main advantages of the Marangu Route is accommodation. It is the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers mountain huts throughout the trek, rather than camping in tents. These shared huts provide basic beds, dining areas, and shelter from the elements, making this route especially appealing for travelers seeking added comfort.

The summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) is made overnight, rewarding climbers with a spectacular sunrise from the highest point in Africa. Despite its reputation as an “easier” route, proper fitness and preparation are essential due to the rapid ascent.

The Marangu Route is ideal for trekkers who prefer hut accommodation and a well-established trail, and for those looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience with added comfort.
